Patmos – A small paradise in the Aegean Sea

The Island of the Apocalypse and the Jerusalem of the Aegean, as Patmos is known worldwide, is one of the most important religious and atmospheric islands in The Aegean Sea. The island combines natural beauty, cultural tradition and religious heritage.

According to Forbes magazine, Patmos called as the “Europe’s most idyllic place to live”.

Patmos Island is mentioned in the Book of Revelation the last book of the Christian Bible. In The introduction of the book it is stated that John the Evangelist, was in the ’’Holy Cave of the Apocalypse’’ in Patmos when he was given a vision from Jesus and spoke with GOD. According to the Christian tradition Patmos is one of the two places in the world where the voice of God was heard. The Visitors have the opportunity to visit the ‘’cave of the Apocalypse’’ where John is said to have received his Revelation.

As being one of the most famous islands for Christian pilgrimage, many visitors choose to explore this island all seasons of the year.

Patmos was declared as “Holy Island” in 1981 with a Greek state law. In 1999 UNESCO listed the capital of the island ‘’Chora ‘’, the Monastery of St. John the Theologian and the Cave of the Apocalypse among the World Heritage Monuments. Additionally Patmos belongs to the network COESIMA, as being one of the seven most important sites of pilgrimage in Europe.

During your visit to the island you may enjoy a magnificent view of the Aegean Sea and discover its beaches, gulfs, bays, coves and capes.

In Chora, the capital of the Patmos island, there are many shops where you can buy gifts and souvenirs or enjoy a  meal to the traditional taverns in the area. In the evening you can enjoy a loose drink at the bars of the island.

Patmos offers an impressive variety of coasts, bays and golden sand beaches like ‘’Agrio Livadi,  Agios Theologos, Kampos” known for its wonderful sea water.

Reaching Patmos can take place either by ship or by renting a helicopter.

Unfortunately the voyage with the ship lasts at least 8 hours and there aren’t daily routes.

Alternatively, you can reach Patmos by a private helicopter charter. The average flight time from Athens to Patmos with helicopter is approximately 60 min

Before landing to Patmos you can get a quick view and a sightseeing tour over the island.

You will also have the opportunity to enjoy from above some neighboring islets like the island complex of Arkioi or the islet of Marathi and Hiliomodi
